Thursday Love: Living in Fear...How to Cope?

Jewel of wisdom du jour: It's hard to look for the light...when you're lost in darkness.

This week we're going to begin our series on abuse of various forms. To begin, let's get the actual definition of the term abuse.
  1. to use wrongly or improperly, misuse
  2. to treat in harmful, injurious, or offensive way
  3. to speak insultingly, harshly or unjustly to or about, revile, malign
So with the term abuse now clearly defined, let's take a look at some of the more common forms of abuse which are Verbal; which is closely linked to emotional/psychological abuse, as well as Physical abuse; which can include sexual abuse. (Unfortunately, we won't be able to discuss EVERY single form of abuse).

In this piece, we're going to begin addressing verbal abuse and how it's closely related to the emotional scars we find in so many people.

Verbal abuse while being one of the more common forms of abuse is rarely taken as seriously as is physical abuse; although it should be. Verbal abuse is characterized by harsh speech that is designed to make the receiver feel low self-worth and or inferiority. This is done through negative or overly sarcastic comments, belittling or demeaning speech, name calling, yelling, and or threatening statements.

  1. Verbal abusers will usually attack their partners through angry outbursts or through blame or accusatory speech, which is aimed at confusing the attacked. It can also be soft/subtle coercion into doing what the abuser wants their partner to do without them even realizing it.
  2. Verbal abuse is a manipulative and controlling behavior. Aimed at eroding one person's self-esteem so that they're dependent upon the abuser.
  3. The unpredictable nature of verbal abuse is a huge problem for those suffering from it. The fact that they never know when a verbal tirade may be on the horizon keeps them on edge and even forces them to believe that they're own behavior is the cause for their partner's outbursts and treatment of them.
  4. Verbal abuse usually escalates in frequency, variety, and intensity the longer it goes on. It tends to start out as little put-downs disguised as jokes and can eventually lead to full verbal barrages intended on striking fear into the person on the receiving end.
Verbal abusers tend to have insecurities within themselves or doubts of adequacy which they tend to impress on others in yet another attempt to control their partner, and make themselves feel better all at the same time.

What most people tend to forget is that words can hurt just as much as physical acts can. People who believe the old adage "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will NEVER hurt me"....have obviously never been verbally abused. When someone is verbally abused it often feels like a punch in the face!

However, most if not all abusers will categorically deny that they are abusive and then it becomes the responsibility of the abused to recognize the abuse as quickly as possible because if left unchecked it can lead the abused into depression to grow. Next week we'll talk about some steps that anyone can take to be proactive against the effects that can be brought on by verbal abuse.

On the Tele: What Not to Wear

The final say-so's of fashion, Stacy London and Clinton Kelly, are back on TLC. The new season will premiere on August 16th and with a new format, the Hollywood Reporter reports. It seems the show will also premiere a renovated studio and a new "360" mirror. I'm sure the fashionally challenged are jumping for joy with that one. In addition, Stacy and Clinton will follow-up with the made-overs 2-weeks post style change to see if they are keeping up with the new looks and how it has changed their lives. The first episode of the new season spotlights Jenny McCarthy and Cheryl Burke wanting their assistant to be made over. Sounds promising. I know I became a new fan of the show when hair wunderkind Ted Gibson came on.

Livin' la vida Barbie: Ricky Martin and Nicki Minaj for MAC

Ok cosmetic barbs...next year it will be time to shake your bon-bons on over to the M.A.C. stores because starting February 2012, Nicki Minaj and Ricky Martin will be the new Viva Glam-stars representing the brand. The two are currently shooting ads by famed photog David LaChapelle. This is the second collabo for Nicki, when she debuted the infamous Pink Friday lipstick (of which I never got *le sigh*) with the brand. M.A.C. established Viva Glam in 1994 to raise funds to support men, women, and children affected by HIV/AIDS around the world. Through the sale of limited-edition lipsticks and lip glosses, MAC has raised $224 million for their MAC AIDS Fund to date. I can't wait to see the ads and the new lipstick shades. I always love them.

Going on Impulse: Karl Lagerfeld for Macy's

Ponte "Just Blush" Dress. $99
Not sure what to think just yet. I am all about designer fashion for the masses, but a Karl Lagerfeld and Macy's collabo might just be stretching it a little. Then again, it could be just what we need to chip at the fashion barriers. In any case, I know I will be ALL over this collection, so who am I to judge? If you haven't heard, Monsieur Karl is designing a 45-piece capsule collection for Impulse, the collection sold at Macy's. The collection, set to launch August 31 in 235 Macy's stores, and here's what got my attention, will be priced from $50 - $170. Totally affordable! We can even expect Chanel-esque looks because he is including his signatures: tweed, statement jackets, and dresses. The Karl Lagerfeld for Impulse collection will officially be celebrated in September at the Macy's Herald Square flagship. Can you say mayhem? I wonder who is next to collabo with the department store. Seems like all it takes it one to pioneer the movement.

Here are some other sneak peeks of the collection:

Ponte and Poplin Dress. $139
Floral print dress. $109.

The Tents - New York Fashion Week documentary

The Tents Trailer from Marcus K Jones on Vimeo.

Tonight is the premiere of The Tents, a documentary narrating the history and evolution of New York Fashion Week. It chronicles the creation of NYFW from its start with the CFDA back in 1993 to IMG and down to today. This "fashionmentary" features interviews with designers and front row staples such as Betsey Johnson, Carolina Herrera, Donna Karan, Isaac Mizrahi, Tommy Hilfiger, Zac Posen, Glenda Bailey, Hal Rubenstein, Nina Garcia, and Suzy Menkes. While it's premiering tonight at the SVA Theater, it has a later release date in September. This is one documentary I don't want to miss seeing.

Fallen Star: Amy Winehouse Sept. 14, 2983 - July 23, 2011

Grammy-winning, beehive donning, soul-jazz singer Amy Winehouse was found dead earlier today in her London flat. I couldn't believe what I was reading on Twitter this morning. I thought the reports were false, as sometimes they are, but when CNN broke the news, I sadly knew it was true. Amy was so talented and troubled. It's a shame that her life was cut so short. While there isn't confirmation of why she died, it is reported and speculated that it might have been from a drug overdose. She was just 27.

Fashion News: Kanye West to debut at NYFW

Did you know that Kanye West is set to debut his fashion line during this NYFW season? NY Daily News reports that the fashion savvy music artist is collabo-ing with British designer Louise Goldin for his luxury line. Seems he has been working with Louise for months on this R-T-W line, and has been operating out of offices in New York and London. I guess those internships he had with Fendi, Raf Simmons, and the collabo with Louis Vuitton has really paid off. That's one show I hope to be in the rows at.

Style Snaps: Beyonce in Orange

So ever since I saw this photo of Beyonce coming out of Harrod's in London, I have been obsessed with finding an orange dress. I thought it would be nice if I finally featured it on the site, and hopefully inspire some dolls to incorporate the pretty bold color into their summer wardrobe. Beyonce decided to go minimal and skipped the accessories, which is fabulous because it lets the ensemble shine on its own. She also threw on a neutral color platform, not nude, which I also think works.

Here are some of my style ideas based off the celeb muse Beyonce:

The Glambergirl Alert: Premiere Week in NYC

On any given week New York City could be inundated with celebs. This week in particular, the city brought two big movie premieres back to back at the Ziegfeld Theater. I had a front row stand for the
Friends with Benefits premiere on Monday July 18th. Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, stars of the film, looked great! They even took the time to sign some autographs and take photos for fans.

Starlet Emma Stone, who also was at the Friends with Benefits premiere, attended the premiere for her
own movie Crazy, Stupid, Love that took place on Tuesday July 19th at the same theater. I love me some Emma Stone and I’m glad she’s back to her red hair. I like her blonde but I LOVE her red! Ryan Gosling also looked dapper in his checkered, black suit.

Both films look great and I can’t wait to see them! Friends with Benefits hits theaters Friday July 22nd and
Crazy, Stupid, Love hits theaters Friday July 29th.

P.S. Check out my video from the Friends with Benefits premiere!

On the Cover: Beyonce 4 Complex Magazine

August/September 2011 Complex issue
Ah, to be a citizen of Beyonce's world. Beyonce covers the latest August/September Style & Design issue of Complex magazine. The issue showcases all cutting-edge developments and of course with her new album 4, her bold new creative sound definitely fits right in. The issue, which hits stands August 9th, was shot by photog Thierry Le Goues. In her Mighty Fly interview she talks about her new album, inspirations, the "feuds" between her and Kelly Rowland and Rihanna, and how she isn't afraid to turn 30.

On the Tele: Project Runway Season 9

Starting on July 28th, Project Runway is back on Lifetime! Season 9 will be making history in the series, as 20 designer hopefuls will try to sew their way into the 16 coveted spots. Oh how I have been missing Michael Kors commentary in my life. Time to "make it work".

Heart-Breaking News: J.Lo and Marc Anthony Move to Divorceville

I don't know about you...but I am pretty shocked by this split. Us Magazine is confirming that J. Lo and Marc Anthony are getting a divorce. After just seven years, the couple said that, "..We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters..." Hmmm...well at least it's amicable. I guess Jenny is back on the block again.

Model Walk: Anansa Johnson

On My Radar: Shuella

When it rains, I typically put away my cute shoes (or carry them in my bag) and clunk around in my rainboots (still cute, but down on the fierceness meter). From the looks of it, it seems we don't have to pick one, we can wear both. Enter SHUELLA...your shoes' umbrella. You can easily slip on a Shuella over your heels and walk confidently in the rain. They accommodate any heel height and come in fabulous colors to match your outfit (love when you don't have to sacrifice style for practicality). They also have a slip-free sole, which is a must-have for the slippery train floors (I've seen and been a victim of way too many of those incidents). Plus, they come in a stylish carrying case that fits into your handbag, so you're always ready for a surprise shower.

Since the "sun don't shine forever, you can stand in your shuella ella ella..." (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

Thursday Love: Communication...How Important? Part 2

Jewel of wisdom du jour: Words are the most power drug used by mankind...Use them wisely!

Last week we learned what characteristics constitute ineffective communication and what needs to be avoided. So let’s examine what characteristics we should be striving to implement into our relationships.

  1.  Effective communication is direct and to the point, leaving no doubt as to what is meant, nor any room for any misunderstanding. Honest thoughts and needs are stated.
  2. Effectively communicating means not being afraid to say what’s on your mind.
  3. Effective communication is not silent when there are issues that NEED to be addressed.
  4. Effective communication is TWO-WAY, made up of equal parts of talking and listening.
  5. Effective communication is responsive and respectful because attention is being paid to the needs and perspective of both parties involved.
Inculcating these characteristics into your relationship’s communication is easier said than done, however, love and respect for your partner should motivate you to start taking these characteristics to heart and use them to begin improving the quality of your communication.

Good communication habits are vital to the health and success of a relationship. It’s imperative to find out which ways of communicating work for you and your partner. Try to find new ways to express your feelings and share your goals and ideas. Share your personal successes with your partner, and they in turn will do the same with you; which will deepen and strengthen your relationship. Avoid harmful or abusive speech that insults, puts down, degrades, or embarrasses your partner. When these types of things are said toward or about one another, they kill self-esteem and are the beginning infection that will slowly kill a relationship. If arguments arise, as we all know they will, try replacing negative hurtful phrases with more positive terms. So instead of saying… “You just don’t get it”….say “allow me to explain”. Instead of saying “You have no clue what you’re talking about”…say “maybe I can clarify”. Your attempts to remain calm and communicate effectively should have a positive effect on your partner and likely will result in their attempt to communicate effectively as well.

Try this exercise called “The Sentence-Completion Method”. You and your partner take turns completing the following statements about communication. Finish each statement openly and honestly, speaking seriously from the heart.
  1.  In my opinion effective communication is...
  2. The hard part of communicating my feelings is...
  3. Sometimes I pull away from openly communicating because...
  4. When I try to express intimate feelings...
  5. I tend to close the door on communication when…
By truly completing those statements and allowing your partner to honestly complete them as well, you should have a little better understanding of your partner’s makeup. If you remember nothing else, remember this…communication is a gift and using it wisely will work out to everyone’s advantage, however, it’s only as effective as the partner’s involved work for it to be.

The Glambergirl Alert: Wizards, Warlocks, and Witches, Oh My!

Glamber Alert!!!

This week is bittersweet for Harry Potter fans. On a positive note Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 finally hits theaters at the end of this week on Friday, July 15th but on a negative note the premiere marks the last of the popular Harry Potter films based on the world famous book series by J.K. Rowling.

Hundreds of fans flocked to Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center to catch a glimpse of their favorite Harry Potter characters as they walked the red carpet for the NYC premiere on Monday July 11th. Now I admit I did walk past the Lincoln Center and thought about hanging around to watch the red carpet arrivals but as a TRUE Twilight fan I felt that would be betraying my addiction, LOL, so opted out.

All the stars looked great but my fav of the event was Emma Watson who plays Hermione Granger in the popular franchise. She wore a Bottega Veneta gown. Emma sure works the hell out of that pixie cut and finds the perfect dresses to accentuate her look. Thumbs up!

Farewell Harry Potter! You had an amazing run.

News: Beckhams Welcome a Baby Girl

Photo David Beckham took of Posh and posted on Facebook.
It's official (in case you haven't heard)! Victoria and David Beckham welcomed their baby girl yesterday morning at Cedars-Sinai hospital in L.A. She was born at 7:55am. Posh chose the name Harper Seven. Her inspiration behind the name: Harper is an old English name that always caught her fancy, and Seven is her lucky number (and she was born in July - 7th month, and just after 7am.). I am just loving the name!! Well, little Harper can expect to receive a lot of love and attention since she is the only girl in the Beckhams brood. I'm sure Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz will be fab big brothers. Congrats to the Beckhams!

Thursday Love: Communication...How Important? Part 1

Jewel of wisdom du jour: "COMMUNICATION WORKS FOR THOSE WHO WORK AT IT."

Last week we spoke about "friendship" being one of the most important things upon which a strong foundation for a relationship can be built. If a strong friendship represents the bricks used to build a strong foundation, then communication is undoubtedly the mortar. Communication is the way in which our thoughts, feelings, values, priorities, and beliefs are expressed. Not only what we say but also our body language communicates a great deal to those we're closest with. I know in my own relationship, I can tell if my wife is bothered by something just by the way she looks at me, she of course will have to tell me what the problem is, but I can tell that there DEFINITELY is a problem just by looking at her face. The point is that we must become effective communicators in order to meet the needs of our partner and to have our needs met as well...this is why honest and open communication is so very dearly necessary.

Ask yourself a question...is my communication with my partner effective? Do they understand what I'm feeling when I try to explain myself? Do I convey my needs or feelings accurately and understandably? Or do my partner and I end up screaming at one another when we try to talk about our feelings?

Good communication requires willful and attentive listening to one another so as to respect and comprehend what points each other are trying to get across. Problems occur when we don't know how to calmly and concisely state what's bothering us or what we need to talk about. There's nothing wrong with having a lot to say about how we feel but, initially we need to be direct and to the point. Clearly communicating your expectations, needs, desires, dreams/goals, etc. early in a relationship will benefit the both of you in the long run. This way there are no surprises when either you or your partner say something regarding their feelings toward a certain situation or bring up an issue that may be on their mind.

So then, let's look at the characteristics of INEFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION and see if there's anything we need to work on.
  • Are viewpoints ever clearly stated or always indirectly mentioned?
  • Is someone in the conversation entirely too passive, allowing their thoughts, ideas, or feelings to be stomped on?
  • Does one person tend to hide the meaning of what they're actually trying to say to avoid conflict or just to get the conversation over with?
  • Are there way too many ONE-WAY conversations that stifle one person's needs and or feelings?
  • Are one or both parties involved unresponsive to the needs of the other person, or is the other person's perspective completely ignored?
  • Are dishonest ideas or half-truths used to replace true feelings?
  • Are real feelings and underlying issues readily expressed or bottled up?
Now, we have to be honest with ourselves and with our partners and really work at eliminating these aforementioned characteristics of ineffective communication. Because none of us want to end up angry, upset, and giving/receiving the silent treatment every time we try to talk about something. Remember though, that it's most important to analyze yourself first regarding these negative characteristics before applying them to your partner as if you're perfect.

Next week, we'll continue this discussion and see what steps we can take to develop EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION  within our relationships.

FBC : Men - 10 Essential Skills, The Professional's Guide

The book cover.
Photo of Swing a Golf Club chapter.
Ok "kens" this book is for you! I was recently intro'd to this book and sent a copy to read and review for you. I must say, this is a definite must-read for guys! Men: 10 Essential Skills - The Professional's Guide by RVR (and other authors) covers 10 essential skills every guy should know, such as: Tie a Tie, Propose a Toast, Order and Taste Wine in a Restaurant, and Keep the Girl. It's the perfect "how-to" and "how-to-do-it-well" book for the guy that needs to know the basics. It's well illustrated, which is definitely needed for the Tie a Tie section that teaches step-by-step how to tie a necktie (with your choice of three basic knots) and bow tie. Sidenote: I also think ladies should know how to do that as well. Other skills like Play Poker, Swing a Golf Club, Mix a James Bond Martini make sure the guy is well-rounded. I think the book highlights the benefits of being a guy. I love how the book got started. The idea of it was started with 6 guys sitting around a campfire, puffing on cigars, sharing bottles of fine Bordeaux, and bringing up "The List" (skills that men cannot survive without). The primary author and publisher, RVR (which stands for Robert Valdes-Rodriguez), reached out to friends and friends of friends who are all pros in their area for assistance with the book, and voila! A guide for the savvy guy. By the way, RVR is also a luxury neckwear designer.

Photo of the Tie a Tie section.
It's a fabulous 106-pg book that you can jump right on in with. And since each skill has its own chapter, you can just go straight to the section you're most interested in (or need help with the most). So "kens" this is the perfect summer read for you because us "dolls" appreciate a guy who knows how to propose a toast, tie a tie, order wine, and know how to keep us.

Pick up your copy at Amazon for just $19.99.

Good Morning Beyonce!

What a way to start off July 4th weekend with a Good Morning America performance by Beyonce. This morning (thanks to my aunt who sent out my wake up text) I started my day off with Bey. I did miss her first performance of Who Run the World (Girls), but picked right up with 1+1 and Best Thing I Never Had, and it's not complete without Single Ladies which she rocked out last. Beyonce was a ball of sunshine in her mini-yellow crochet fringe dress, and blonde curly locks. Her work ethic is surpassing and it definitely pays off! I'll be the first to say (even though everyone who knows me knows I am a MAJOR Bey fan), she might not be the best singer out there, but she has to got to be one of the best female performers hands down.

In case you missed it today, check out her interview:
