MBFW: Supima Design Competition S/S 13

Abigail Glass, designer
Thanks to My Life on and off the Guestlist, I was able to attend and cover the Supima Design Competition at Lincoln Center on Thursday to officially kick off MBFW. The show held in The Studio, featured 8 designers: Yvonne Luong (FIT), Kyle  Pearson (FIT), Meredith Lyons (Pratt), Kate Wilkoff (Pratt), Abigail Glass (Rhode Island School of Design), Jacqueline Seifert (Rhode Island School of Design), Eduardo Calvo (Savannah College of Art and Design), and Natalia Yepes (Savannah College of Art and Design) all competing for a chance to win $10,000 cash. The competition was being judged on originality and use of the textiles cotton, corduroy, jersey, and denim. So this definitely required all of the designers to think outside the box. There is no way I could have been a judge. All of the designers brought their own voice and vision to the runway. The judges were Tadashi Shoji, Cindy Weber-Cleary (InStyle), Alexandra Wilson (Gilt Groupe), Kristina O’Neil (Bazaar), Buxton Midyette (Supima), and Aslaug Magnusdottir (Moda Operandi). "I died" when I saw who the host was...Rachel Zoe. She kind of was on stealth mode because I never saw her come in and sit down. She looked fab in a killer black sequin jacket. Second highlight, sitting next to Dave who was wearing a hair neck accessory. Yes, made of real hair.

After the 8 presentations, it was time to announce the winner. The winner was Kate Wilkoff. And I have to say, I kind of figured it would be her. Something about her collection stood out to me. I still think everyone was great and wish all of the designers the best!
