Socialite-ing: Sugarcane Raw Bar & Grill Grand Opening

Me walking into Sugarcane
Thanks to the Queen of Style, I was able to attend the Grand Opening of Sugarcane Raw Bar & Grill. To say I had a good time would be an understatement. From when I first walked in and heard the live band making the place feel like I was in NOLA, I just knew I was in for a good time. (The brass band, I found out, is Hudson Horn.) All guests were greeted with a drink of their choice. At the time I walked in, I was offered either red or white wine…and I chose white. When my friend walked in later, she was offered red wine or a mojito. And she chose the mojito. Win-win! Of course, at that time I had finished my wine, so I was ready for a mojito.

Staff was walking around with passed food such as sushi, roasted corn, bacon wrapped dates, roasted brussel sprouts with a balsamic glaze, and much more. I love sushi and I highly enjoyed the yellowtail with mandarin. It was delicious and I didn’t even need wasabi and soy sauce. It was good just on its own. When you have fresh sushi, it makes a world of difference. The bacon wrapped dates audibly made us say “mmmmmm” and my eyes enlarged when I took the first bite. In the main part of the restaurant, there was a huge sushi buffet of assorted sushi and sashimi with salmon, tuna,
shrimp, yellowtail, raw oysters, and the like. You can just grab a pair of chopsticks at one end, and go down the line and help yourself. And it never ran out because the chefs were right behind the buffet bar making more. (I love when you can see the chefs in open view and get to mingle with them too.)

The band played modern day hits with a New Orleans vibe and really got us moving and dancing and having fun. When they stopped playing, there was a chic female DJ (DJ Mia Moretti) who took over and she kept the party going. Well I thought the main room was all there was, but we were shocked when we kept walking towards the back where it opens up into another space and there were more delectable bites and drinks being poured. Another buffet bar housed marinated short ribs, lemon-marinated shredded goat, pulled pork with a mango-chutney sauce on top of a cracker, roasted cauliflower, beets with parsley, marinated chickpeas, pita chips, and the like. When I tell you how tasty everything was! Words cannot describe. Every bite, my eyes got big, and I started dancing a little. All of the meat dishes melted like butter in your mouth.

The staff was very attentive, helpful, and polite…not to mention they were funny. They made sure guests had everything they needed and kept the food and drinks flowing. Wait, I didn’t talk about the drinks. My compliments to the bartenders!!! The mojitos were great! And while I usually love sweeter wines, the white wine was a delight.

Sugarcane is definitely the perfect spot for a date night, girls night, or just a spot to meet up with friends. It is very welcoming, and the ambiance (lighting and booth style seating) makes you comfortable and relaxed. You can hang out at the bar, or slide into one of their big half circle booths. Not to mention, you face the Manhattan Bridge and the water, which is the perfect backdrop. I had a great time and am already making plans to go with friends.
